The picture is mixed — the stock is oscillating around its key levels without committing in either direction. The market hasn't made up its mind. The stock is also gaining ground versus the S&P 500, earning its place in the portfolio rather than simply riding the market higher. The first area where sustained buying would suggest the trend is firming up is near the 50-day average at $671 and what post-earnings buyers paid at $637. The level to watch is the 200-day average at $631 — reclaiming it with conviction would confirm the trend is improving. Risk state is elevated: ATR 3.4% · 1Y DD 29% · 6 dist days · 10 gaps · earnings ~80d.

$META — SELL | 6 MONTHS THESIS

GAAP EPS $3.83 vs $5.46 (-29.9%) ⚠️ one-time | Revenue: $64.6B

Expectations gap: Consensus still models 2027 EPS around $33-34 (roughly 18x at $620) and the sell-side average target sits near $843 with Wells Fargo at $995 Overweight - both assume a capex trajectory that management has not confirmed. Deutsche Bank's own modeling has 2027 capex at $210-215B and ~$265B in 2028, versus $135-145B in 2026. At that spending level, incremental depreciation alone plausibly removes $8-14 of 2027 EPS versus current models, and a capital raise via Class C stock adds dilution on top. On a reset $29-31 EPS power at 17-18x the equity is worth $500-560, i.e., 10-20% below spot. The market has repriced the stock but not the earnings base; the estimates are still the pre-capex version.

Business quality: 7/10

Valuation: At $620.19 the market cap is ~$1.37T on 2.21B shares (the $1.61T figure in the data pack implies a stale or different share count), which is ~18x consensus 2027E EPS of ~$34 and ~20-21x my reset $29-31 estimate. That is not a discount to the S&P 500 at ~19x forward, it is an in-line multiple for a company whose free cash flow just went negative and whose revenue growth has decelerated four straight quarters (33% -> 28% -> 26% -> guided 22-27%). The quant screen has META at the 100th percentile of P/E within Communication Services - the highest multiple in its own sector - while the sector-neutral expected six-month return is 0.0%. Fair value range $500-575; the $700-780 zone is where the multiple only works if 2027 capex lands under $175B.

Reference class: Mega-cap ad-funded platform / AI infrastructure spender; comparable to Alphabet (which is guiding to even larger absolute capex but retains a lower-multiple, search-and-cloud earnings mix), Amazon's advertising segment, and smaller ad platforms SNAP and PINS on the demand side. The relevant peer set for the capex/FCF debate is the hyperscaler group, not the ad group.

Catalyst: Primary: Q4 FY2026 report in late January 2027, which per CFO Susan Li is when 2027 capex guidance is disclosed - the exact disclosure that produced the last three post-earnings drawdowns. Secondary: the Jan 19, 2027 effective date for the Class C non-voting distribution, which creates a mechanical overhang and telegraphs an equity raise. Tertiary: outcome/appeal posture on the $25B New Mexico penalty. What would break the short: a 2027 capex guide at or below ~$175B, two consecutive quarters of positive free cash flow, or accelerated operating cash flow growth above 20%.

Entry: $620.19, stop $690.0, target $515.0

Reward/risk: 1.5:1

Sizing: Start at half of a normal single-name short (1.0% of NAV at risk to the $690 stop) and only add to a full 1.75-2.0% risk budget if the stock fails at $660-680 on declining volume before the January print. Cap gross exposure at 4% of NAV given mega-cap beta and headline risk.

Invalidation: Thesis is void on a daily close above $690 (above the post-earnings gap and prior consolidation), on any 2027 capex guide at or below $175B, on two consecutive quarters of positive free cash flow, or on an announced data-center financing structure that shifts capex off Meta's own balance sheet. Time stop: if the stock is still between $600-660 with no new capex information by mid-January, cut the position in half rather than carry full risk into the print.

Sell META as a 6-month tactical short funded from a mega-cap tech sleeve, not a structural short on the franchise. The franchise is fine - 26% revenue growth at $64.6B a quarter, ad pricing +14%, $32.8B of quarterly operating cash - but the equity is priced off a pre-capex earnings base while free cash flow has gone negative, capex is stepping toward $210B+ in 2027, a $25B state penalty is in appeal, and a Class C share class was created specifically to sell stock. Enter $615-645, stop $690, first target $540-555 (the twice-tested July/April base) and final target $515; that is roughly 1.7:1 reward/risk. Size at half normal initially. The single date that matters is the late-January Q4 call when 2027 capex lands - if the guide comes in under $175B or FCF turns positive, exit immediately and flip to neutral; the thesis is about a missing capex number, not about the ad business breaking.
