LITTLE EVIDENCE AI IS TO BLAME FOR DECLINE IN YOUTH HIRING , NEW STATCAN STUDY FINDS
StatCan study finds little evidence linking AI to youth hiring decline.
Context
What happened: A Statistics Canada study found "no broad evidence" that AI has caused substantial declines in hiring or rises in job separation rates in Canada since ChatGPT launched in November 2022, including for youth and AI-exposed jobs.
Key numbers: Youth hiring in low-AI-exposure jobs fell from 4 per cent to 3.3
Why it matters: Co-author Tahsin Mehdi attributed weaker youth hiring to competing forces such as trade dynamics, U.S. tariffs and population growth, and said pandemic over-hiring may explain coding declines. Researcher Viet Vu said such studies can counter fear around AI.
