Jordan's deadly retaliatory strike in Syria follows a church attack, signaling escalation.
Context
What happened: Jordan struck what its military called "terrorist organisations" in Syria in retaliation for a funeral attack in Karak that killed nine people. Syria said five people, including women, children and an elderly man, were killed in the strike on a village in Daraa province.
Key numbers: Nine killed and 34 injured in Friday's church shooting in Karak.
Why it matters: Syria closed the Nassib border crossing, the only passenger and commercial route between the two countries, and said it had not been notified of the strike. Jordan said it had co-ordinated with the Syrian government.
